More than a year later, literally at a crossroads, they find each other together on a journey that is a pause between a painful past and an uncertain future. In this sexy and offbeat summer read, Gray and Dylan discover that a destination isn’t always a place. More often, it’s a person. Now it’s time for them to finally decide, is this forever?

Kommentar

I feel like I’m looking at Fate and Timing and Luck all moving into one tangible space.
I head towards her and get down on my knees in front of her. Everything feels like slow motion. Even my heartbeat is pausing for breath. Movement has a new meaning, every touch has complexity. Nothing is easy and it’s too easy.

I forgot how well she knows me, how her questions are like keys and she knows just the right ones to use to pick my locks.

I don’t tell her why I’m relaxed. Why I’m happy. Her energy has always had that effect on me. She energizes me but in a completely calming way, like lying out in the sun, feeling your insides heat up, all the way to your core.

I’ve decided that love makes people stupid. We never learn from our mistakes. I tried love once and I got burned. I tried it once more, just to see if I got it wrong, if the second time around I would be smarter and stay further away from the flame or carry water to put it out completely. The second time around I crashed to the ground in a smoldering heap.
Yet here I am, at its mercy again and I can thrash and flail and roll around, but I can’t put it out. I can’t escape its drawing heat.

»All I wanted to do was give you a ride to Flagstaff,” I say. “That’s it. Just one, simple ride. But nothing is ever simple with you, is it, Dylan?«

The air is cold; it carries faint traces of fall. A whisper of sunlight edges into the sky. I can almost feel the earth spinning on its axis, always looking for the sun, attracted by her golden light. I close my eyes.
Tonight it was all so simple. The dark is like fuel for desire, always pushing you one step further, encouraging you to take chances while no one is watching. But the light is a harsh judge of night’s impulsive decisions. Now everything is complicated. And worse, possibly all a mistake.
My eyes are heavy and dry and they burn from two nights of no sleep. I feel her now, like a ticking clock next to me, reminding me to savor each second, as if my relationship with her is always set on a timer about to go off.

Sometimes, when life slams a door in your face your only defense is to shut it out for a while. Dylan doesn’t understand this, her mind doesn’t got that dark. She never feels the need to hide, so tonight I can show her how.

I have strings and they are connected to her hands and she’s playing me. And she knows it.

Maybe we’re just two souls, lost, only complete when we’re together. Maybe that’s what love is all about. Being humble enough to admit you can’t make it on your own. You need a person in order to call a place home. You need love to safe you from yourself. You need to love another person so you give a little something every day.

»[My camera] helps me to see,« I say. »I appreciate so much more when I have it. It widens my perspective; it makes me want to soak up every detail. It never misses a thing, it never blinks. The whole world is crisper and brighter and clearer. It sees beauty without judging it. It makes me want to take every temporary moment and make it permanent.«

13/15

Serie: First Comes Love, #3

Inhalt

College baseball player, Gray Thomas, had to go far out into left field to find a girl like Dylan, the ex-love-of-his-life.
